Standard-rate tuition clears first legislative hurdle
Today, the Senate Education Committee passed Senate Bill 15 on a 4-3 vote. Sponsored by Sens. Angela Giron (D-Pueblo) and Michael Johnston (D-Denver), the bill creates a new higher education tuition category called standard-rate tuition. Dorian DeLong, District Twelve EA member, testified in favor of the bill today, underscoring the importance of providing all students the opportunity to go to college.
To be eligible for this new tuition rate, a student must attend three or more years of high school in Colorado and graduate or obtain a GED. The student will have to be accepted at one of Colorado’s institutions of higher learning within 12 months after graduating/earning a GED.
CEA is working in a broad coalition with other education groups to support the bill. Last year the University of Colorado Board of Regents did not support the bill. A recent Boulder Daily Camera story said the Regents might favor the bill this year.
For CEA, SB 15 means that more students will go to college and our state’s higher ed institutions will get more tuition revenue.
